Paid intern opportunity for a Sheffield Law Student
Position: Project Intern
Location: Sheffield based, with funded travel to London and Manchester for evening
events during Pro Bono Week in November.
Duration: October – December 2025 (Semester 1) - Starting ASAP ideally w/c 13th
October.
Reporting to: Project Director
Rate: £12.21 per hour, for 4 hours per week
Overview of NPBC
The National Pro Bono Centre brings together charities dedicated to providing pro bono
legal services and improving access to justice. We serve as a central resource for
charities who help people seeking free legal advice and representation. Our work
fosters collaboration, coordination, and improved service delivery among stakeholders
in the pro bono sector. Through our work, the Centre supports the wide range of pro
bono projects and brokerage which charities provide; helping individuals and
communities all over England and Wales get access to justice.
Role Overview
The NPBC are looking for an enthusiastic second/ third-year / masters level Sheffield
based law student who is keen to gain exposure in the access to justice space. The role
involves a commitment of 4 hours per week, with work carried out through a mix of in-
person (primarily in Sheffield) and online. The working pattern can be agreed upon
appointment.
Working with the Project Director, the intern would be supporting with two specific
projects which support the wider pro bono / social welfare advice sector:
- Supporting with administration of the online Justice Library, which is temporarily
hosted by the National Pro Bono Centre
- Working on a sandboxed site trialing a template online version of the Guide to
Pro Bono and Free Legal Advice
And be involved with two in-person events during pro bono week, with attendees
including individuals from law firms, barrister chambers and pro bono legal charities:
- Supporting the NPBC with their event during pro bono week, and supporting at
the opening of Pro Bono Week. (London based day, 3 rd November).
- Supporting the Greater Manchester Pro Bono Committee (with the Project
Director) with their event during pro bono week (Manchester based afternoon, 6 th
November)
For this role you will need to use your own laptop and phone and have access to
internet with good connection.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and update the Justice Library by sourcing and uploading new research
publications, impact reports and other relevant materials from access to justice
charities and academic institutions.
- Manage and update the online guide to pro bono and free legal advice by
uploading charity profiles to the site, ensuring accuracy of completeness of the
data.
- Provide administrative support to the Project Director, particularly in the planning
and coordination of events during pro bono week.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications
- Attention to detail and strong organisational skills
- Understanding of the different areas of social welfare law and how this sits within
the advice / legal aid sector
- Event management / coordination experience desired, though not essential.
- Strong interpersonal skills and confidence to speak to a range of individuals
across the legal profession.
Learning outcomes
- Gain practical experience of the pro bono and charity sector
- Understand the networks of pro bono across northern regions
- Exposure to a range of advice charities and their research, data and reports
- Involvement in cross-sector decision-making.
