 Careers Week 2024 is almost here!

Don’t miss this year’s Careers Week, dedicated to answering your careers and employability-related questions and giving you the opportunity to explore a wide range of opportunities, from internships to part-time jobs, and from employer and alumni panels to tailored careers workshops.

→ Chat, Chocolate and Careers Monday 19th February, 10 am - 3 pm Find out more	Join us at the SU Hub, the Cornerstone, or in Jessop West to enjoy some free chocolate (dairy, vegan, or healthy) and chat about any of your career-related questions. No need to book, just drop in!
→ Placement Year Talks Year 1 - Monday 19th Feb, 1-2 pm; Year 2 - Tuesday 20th Feb, 1-2 pm 1st year students: book your place 2nd year students: book your place	Learn what a placement year is like, the ways it can boost your career, and the support available to you, and hear from a student currently doing a placement!
→ Green Careers: Roles in Sustainability Tuesday 20th February, 3-5 pm Book your place	Meet professionals who have incorporated a passion for sustainability into their careers. Aimed at Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences students. You will also have a chance to chat informally with the professionals. Refreshments will be provided.
→ Work Experience Insights Event Wednesday 21st February, 12-3 pm Book your place	Meet local and national employers and find your next part-time job, placement, or internship opportunity! Find out more about the career opportunities open to you, get your own professional LinkedIn headshot photo, and speak to our advisers.
→ Mock Assessment Centre Thursday 22nd February, 2-5 pm Book your place	Practice two sustainability-themed assessment centre activities, and network and get feedback from attending employers from different industries and careers staff. Places are limited and fill up quickly, so make sure to apply for a place soon!
→ Could the University be your graduate employer? Thursday 22nd February, 1-2 pm Book your place	Find out about the range of graduate opportunities at the University of Sheffield, hear from graduates about their transition from student to staff member, and get answers to your questions in an interactive Q&A session.

London City Connections

Aimed at penultimate and final year UG students from the Faculty, with priority given to students who meet widening participation criteria.

Gain a unique perspective on working in the Capital with a free day trip to visit London businesses (all travel included)

Application deadline: Sunday 11 February

Travel as a group to meet professionals living and working in London, who graduated from the University of Sheffield, in a huge range of roles with Social Sciences and Arts/Humanities backgrounds. Whatever your degree subject or career aspirations, LCC is a fantastic chance to see what London has to offer and gain insight from those who were once in your shoes - including their top tips for job applications and interviews.

What’s involved? 

• A pre-event workshop on Wednesday 6 March, 10am-12pm to help you prepare and feel confident

• A full day and evening trip to London on Wednesday 13 March 2024

• A post-event workshop on Wednesday 20 March, 10am-11am

The trip includes …..

1. A morning visit to one of the following to Youth Futures Foundation or Museum of the Order of St John

2. An afternoon visit and workshop at Velonetic (Insurance Firm based in the City)

3. Evening networking session with a broad range of UoS graduates (hosted at Velonetic)

Civil Service - Summer and Year Placements in Sheffield & Leeds

Aimed at penultimate year UG students from the Faculty.

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Department for Education (DFE) in Sheffield and Leeds are offering a unique opportunity for you to gain Civil Service experience, offering a bespoke placement programme for students at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Leeds. Vacancies will be available for 10 week placements during the summer of 2024, and a Placement year starting in summer 2024. Vacancies will be advertised on the Civil Service jobs website soon.  

Come along to an informal information session to hear more from DWP and DFE colleagues about the programme, meet students who took part last year, and gain insights to help you through the application process.

Easter Workplace Insights

Aimed at penultimate year UG students from the Faculty.

Are you interested in gaining experience related to your passions and interests? Complete a project for an organisation and receive a £770 bursary!

The Employability Team in the Faculty of Social Sciences have sourced over 100 internships exclusively for 2nd year University of Sheffield students. You’ll receive £770 for completing a 70 hour internship

• The internship takes place in the University Easter vacation - between 25 March and 12 April 2024

• Projects designed with your discipline, skills and interests in mind

• Projects designed to offer ‘early career’ experience - apply even if you have limited experience so far 

• Develop new skills, build confidence and networks in a professional environment, and gain career insights 

There are two schemes available: 

Main Workplace Insights programme - a wide range of projects for all Social Sciences disciplines - see this information pack for examples and application tips

Civil Service Workplace Insights - we have 16 projects available with DWP, DfE and the Home Office - projects making a real contribution to policy development. See the information pack for examples from last year.

Aimed at final-year UG and PGT students

The University of Sheffield Internship Scheme offers final-year undergraduate and PGT students the opportunity to undertake a paid internship with a University department.

35-hour and 70-hour internships will be available across a variety of roles to help build your employability, gain valuable work experience, and develop your skills.
