Film Unit Cinema – affordable cinema viewing!

 

Whether you are a big film buff or are just looking for something to do with friends on a weekday night, Film Unit could be for you!

This independent cinema is located in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium in the Students’ Union. They put on a great selection of films across the year for very affordable prices. At the time of writing, the film “Dune 2” (not even out of cinemas yet!) is being shown for the price of £3, compared to the £12.50 you would have to pay to see it at a regular cinema. 

Film Unit Cinema is the longest serving student film society in the UK, starting up 75 years ago in 1949. The fact they are still around in a technological age where movies are available on demand is a testament to the service that they provide!

It is also the closest located cinema to those living in halls in Ranmoor and Endcliffe, and to the many more students living in Crookes or Broomhall.

 Film Unit have recently put together a set of films called “Culture Shock” (or the Best Movies You’ve Never Seen). Described as a “weekly selection of the less seen side of cinema”, the programme aims to show films that have gone under the radar of blockbuster acclaim yet are appreciated by those who have seen them.

 Catching a film is a great way to take your mind off studies, I love getting engrossed in a storyline for a couple of hours with no distractions aside from the delicious smell of popcorn!
