By design, recruitment processes are challenging; for disabled students, however, without the right support and adjustments, they can become totally inaccessible. And whilst requesting support should be easy, for many students doing so can be a huge barrier.
Concerns around stigma, uncertainty about what support is available or possible, and confusion over what counts as a 'reasonable adjustment' can leave students feeling stuck and unsupported.
This interactive session will give university staff the skills and confidence to better support disabled students as they prepare for, and navigate, the recruitment process including how to:
- Explain the types of support and adjustments employers can provide
- Guide students through the adjustment request process clearly and effectively
- Offer practical, tailored advice to help students succeed in applications and interviews
- Share best practice and discuss common challenges in an open, supportive space
The session will be led by Helen Cooke, CEO and Founder of MyPlus, and will include opportunities for discussion, Q&A, and shared learning.
"Helen delivered a session on requesting adjustments and support. All of the team attended and reported increased confidence and knowledge in this area following the training. We all felt comfortable to ask questions and received supportive and easy to understand answers from Helen. It was such a safe space to discuss the issues of requesting adjustments. I would recommend any team to undertake training with Helen. You will learn so much." Katrina, University of Strathclyde
