Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) 2027

The Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is a funded competitive internship programme for undergraduate students, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry out a 12-week summer internship at a Canadian university between May and October.

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) 2026/27 programme is now open for nominations! The fully funded scheme offers successful candidates from participating countries a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry out a 12-week summer internship at a Canadian university. Internships will take place from May-October 2027 and interns will work on a research project of their choice, under the supervision of a Canadian professor.

The scheme is collectively funded by Mitacs and the UK.

What is Mitacs GRI?

Thanks to a partnership between Universities UK International (UUKi) and Mitacs, the Globalink Research Internship provides UK students with funded 12-week summer internships, hosted by one of Mitacs' 70 partner institutions across Canada. This is a funded opportunity, including the following:

• Return airfare (via reimbursement)
• Student fees at host institution (via reimbursement)

• Access to the Mitacs mentor scheme
• Travel insurance from the University of Sheffield (upon completion of a satisfactory risk assessment)

Please note that although this is a fully funded opportunity, some of these fees (e.g. return flights, visa costs) will be incurred by successful students upfront, and will be reimbursed upon their arrival in Canada.

Who can take part?

Interested students must meet Mitacs' eligibility criteria. This means that at that point that you express interest, you must:Have a minimum age of 18

• Be a Bachelor's degree student due to start final year in 2027/28, or an integrated Master's degree student due to start third year in 2027/28 (i.e. the GRI takes place before your final undergraduate year).
• Have a minimum first year average of 65, or 60 if you are in receipt of a University of Sheffield bursary.
• Be prepared to apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of ten projects, and ensure selections are from at least three different Canadian provinces.
• Be fluent in the oral and written language of the project (English and/or French)
• Be available to spend 12 consecutive weeks at a university in Canada between 1 May and 31 October 2027. In practice, due to Sheffield term dates, you will need to be available between June and September.

Expressions of interest are strongly encouraged from students in receipt of a University of Sheffield bursary.
